  I am 28 and had to have my two bottom wisdom teeth extracted by a surgeon because they were severely impacted and at completely wrong angles. They were each facing outward, so the xrays showed the roots were all curved and messed up. I went in for my consult and met with Dr. Smith, who was very friendly and knowledgeable and didn't try to sell me on all the most expensive stuff. He gave me great info about each level of sedation, and covered everything from extraction to recovery in each explanation. I received a quote that included a discount since my insurance would not cover my surgery, and scheduled an appointment. I had opted for the oral syrup method of sedation, but received a call from the receptionist the week before my appointment. She said that Dr. Smith had reviewed my case again and really felt that IV sedation would be best given the really intense circumstances involved in my surgery. Unfortunately, the IV sedation was about 6x more expensive than the oral syrup and I couldn't afford it. When I explained this to the receptionist, she was very polite and told me that Dr. Smith had offered to do the IV sedation for the same price as the syrup. He really just felt it would make my experience better. I accepted this very kind offer. I showed up for my appointment and they got me in exactly on time. The nurse stayed with me while they gave me the gas first - so that I could relax before they put in the IV (I'm extremely afraid of needles). Dr. Smith came in and administered the IV himself, and I was out in mere seconds. When I awoke, I was very groggy but my husband took good care of me. Later that evening, Dr. Smith called to check in and see how I was feeling and answer any questions I had. He left a VM, and gave me his cell number in case I needed to reach him. I didn't have any problems at all - just some questions regarding the wording on the recovery info sheet they'd given me, so I emailed him whenever I had anything to ask. He always responded within an hour, and was exceptionally polite and helpful and thorough in his responses. I went in for my follow-up, was seen exactly on time, and was told everything looked great. They answered all my questions and sent me on my way. My recovery was longer than most people would experience, given how badly my teeth were positioned and that he had to extract them through the jawbone rather than from the top, but it was not as bad as I had worried at all. Overall, this cost me a lot less than it would have to see the oral surgeon that visits my dentist's office once a month - who was never available to answer questions and who I've heard from other patients was not very helpful or kind. Dr. Smith and his staff are amazing, generous, and really look out for the well being of their patients. It's obviously more about customer service and the comfort and safety of their patients than about making the big bucks, and for that I would recommend Dr. Smith to anybody in the Austin area needing oral surgery. Even if you live pretty far away, a trek to Pflugerville to see Dr. Smith is absolutely, 100% worth it!
